I purchased by Lumix DMW-FZ100 camera from Amazon months ago now and am using the original BMB9 battery that came with it. It has EXCELLENT battery life, no problem at all, EXCEPT I have always carried spare batteries for long photo ops and also to let my battery run out completely. Then I put a new battery in the camera.

The problem is that Panasonic has been VERY slow to get this battery on the market so you can get and carry spares for the cameras that use it. I have just ordered two batteries. I carry two fully charged batteries with me and let the one in the camera discharge fully through use. I cycle the batteries carefully, so that the one charged most recently is used last.

It is possible that keeping a battery fully charged without letting it run down reduces capacity to recharge fully. I’m not sure that happens with this kind of battery. It may help to fully discharge the battery and then recharge it. You might have to do that twice. DO NOT DISCHARGE THE BATTERY BY HAVING METAL CROSS CONNECT THE BATTERY CONTACTS. IT RUINS THE BATTERIES TO DO THIS.

It is also true that a COLD battery will not function well and must be warmed to work. I keep my spares in an inside pocket in cold weather so they will be ready for use. I also have got a small case for the camera itself on a neck strap so that I can tuck the camera inside my coat in cold weather, use it, and tuck it away again, so that the battery stays warm enough to work.

Years ago we used to refrigerate batteries to make them go dormant and last longer in between photo shoots, but you had to warm the batteries before your session or they would not work.

I’ve just ordered two of these batteries to use in my cycling routine with camera batteries. I always have two fully charged batteries with me and one in the camera which I discharge fullly.

I have no idea if these suggestions will address the problems of people with battery problems or not. If the batteries are defective, notify Panasonic and see if they can get you fresh ones so you can use your camera.

Hope these suggestions help. I do want to say the Lumix DMW-FZ100 is one very nice camera, has some really unusual capabilities, and you MUST read the directions and study the specs to get the best our of it.

    Good luck.

This is an OEM battery and is the only one that will work with your camera’s display (lcd showing how much charge is left). The other knock off’s work, but the display does not show how much charge is left. Run the battery almost empty before re-charging.

The Lumix FZ100 takes a lot of pictures quickly. On one 3 hour daytime hike, my wife & I managed to put over 300 pictures (some with fill-flash)on a 16GB SDHC card and the battery indicator was down to half. On longer hike with more opportunites, we would have emptied the battery. We now carry a 2nd battery.
The FZ100 apparently looks for an embedded security chip on the battery or it won’t use it, so one HAS to buy this Panasonic product. I have NOT personally tested this “FEATURE” with a non-Panasonic battery, but I’ll believe the reviews I’ve read. This “feature” almost caused me to buy a Canon product. The Leica lens turned the decision, but I still don’t like the intimidating Panasonic marketing policy with the batteries.
The other loss of a star was a mis-understanding with a tracking number that required 2 emails to the selling store to clarify. When a seller supplies a tracking number that doesn’t work on either of the obvious shipper websites (ie. UPS & USPS), then I get a little nervous about the integrity of the seller. After the 1st email response which just reiterated some nonsense, my concern increased. The 2nd email response actually clarified the seemingly bogus tracking number with an ACTUAL reference to a website that liked the supplied tracking number – my concerns were allieviated & the battery arrived a little while after the correspondence. This battery works as well a the original supplied battery.
